An Endorsement from Clearwater County Sheriff Darin Halverson

June 29th, 2026

When I decided not to seek reelection for Clearwater County Sheriff, it was one of the most difficult decisions of my career. Whoever is elected as the next Sheriff will bring new leadership and new ideas. It is essential that voters choose someone who is prepared to lead effectively from day one.

The primary election is on August 11, and early voting has already begun. It is important that everyone remembers to vote in the primary election, as only two of the four candidates for Clearwater County Sheriff will advance to the general

election in November.

This election is about choosing the person best prepared to lead our Sheriff's Office from day one. It is not about campaign slogans or telling people what they want to hear. It is about selecting a leader with the experience, judgment, integrity, and

local knowledge necessary to protect our communities and effectively manage one of the county's most important offices. For me, that means supporting candidates who have demonstrated leadership, current law enforcement experience, integrity,

and a long-standing commitment to serving the people of Clearwater County.

As voters prepare to choose our next Sheriff, I encourage everyone to look beyond campaign slogans and promises and carefully consider each candidate's qualifications, experience, and commitment to serving our county. I encourage

every voter to learn about each candidate, ask questions, and cast an informed vote in the primary election on August 11.

Since announcing that I would not seek reelection, many people have asked who I believe is best qualified to serve as the next Sheriff. I was encouraged by the number of people willing to step forward and seek this office. Running for Sheriff requires dedication, commitment, and a willingness to be accountable to the public. I commend all four candidates for offering to serve. That said, in my opinion, two candidates clearly stand out: Chief Deputy Vern Wittenberg and Deputy Clarence LaCroix.

Vern Wittenberg has 24 years of law enforcement experience and has served as Chief Deputy of the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office since 2017. He brings steady leadership and solid experience to the office. Born and raised in Clearwater County, he is familiar with the challenges facing our county and has practical working knowledge of the Sheriff's Office. Serving as second-in-command has

helped prepare him to assume the responsibilities of Sheriff with confidence.

Clarence LaCroix also brings exceptional qualifications. As a Deputy Sheriff, current School Resource Officer in Bagley, and former Jail Administrator, he has served Clearwater County in multiple capacities. Clarence began his law enforcement career with the Bagley Police Department in 2010 and has spent the past 16 years serving the people of our county. His experience working with

students, families, corrections staff, and patrol operations has given him a broad understanding of nearly every function within the Sheriff's Office. Throughout his career, Clarence has earned a reputation for professionalism, leadership, and

building positive relationships throughout the community.

The other candidates bring different backgrounds that voters should also consider. Adam Gunderson has served as the Bagley Police Chief for the past three years and has previously served as a police chief in other communities. While that experience is valuable, leading a municipal police department differs significantly

from managing a county Sheriff's Office. Having never worked for a Sheriff's Office, Adam lacks firsthand experience with the day-to-day operations and statutory responsibilities unique to a Sheriff's Office. I understand those differences firsthand. Before becoming Chief Deputy and later Sheriff, I served as the Bagley Police Chief. Had it not been for the experience and mentorship I received from

former Sheriff Mike Erickson, I would not have been fully prepared to assume the responsibilities of Sheriff. Additionally, having lived and worked in Clearwater County for just over three years, Adam has had less opportunity to develop long-term relationships and gain the local knowledge that comes from years of serving

this county.

The fourth candidate, Larry Johnson, previously served in law enforcement; however, he has been retired from the profession for approximately 18 years. Although his prior service is commendable, advances in technology, evolving training standards, changes in state and federal law, and increasingly complex public safety challenges require today's Sheriff to possess current knowledge and experience. Past service is valuable, but leading a modern Sheriff's Office also requires remaining actively engaged in today's profession.

In my opinion, Clarence LaCroix and Vern Wittenberg are the two candidates best prepared to serve as the next Sheriff of Clearwater County and advance to the general election in November. They have earned my confidence, my trust, and my endorsement.

My endorsement is not based on friendship or politics. While it is true that I hired both men and they currently serve in my office, my decision is based on more than 30 years in law enforcement and my firsthand understanding of what it takes to successfully lead a Sheriff's Office. Public safety is too important to leave to uncertainty. Clearwater County deserves a Sheriff who is ready to assume the responsibilities of the office immediately, provide steady leadership, ensure continuity of operations, and keep our communities safe.

Sincerely,

Darin Halverson

I do not normally post these types of things, however, I feel very strongly about doing my part to see the best candidate is voted into the sheriff’s office.

That said, I believe Vern Wittenberg is the leader we need as our next Sheriff. With over 24 years of law enforcement experience, Vern is honest, fair, dedicated, and knows our community inside and out. He'll protect our families, uphold the law, and always put Clearwater County first.

Having been part of this community for over 30 years, I have witnessed Vern’s action and dedication first hand. I have also watched his participation in community events and how he cares about the needs of this county.

I trust Vern to do everything he can to keep our communities and families safe and secure.

To the Citizens of Clearwater County:

When Vern Wittenberg filed to fill the open Clearwater County Sheriff position, my first thought was “I’ll Vote for Vern” –I thought he’s a good guy, he impresses me with his leadership in the current Sheriff’s Office, a family man with strong roots in Clearwater County.

Then 3 more good guys file for this open Sheriff run! But my gut feeling still remained with giving MY Vote for Vern.

Vern has over 24 years experience in Law Enforcement with the last 9+ years serving as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Darin Halverson. These 9 years have prepared Vern to serve Clearwater County and make the transition smooth and continue that same strong leadership demonstrated by Sheriff Halverson. Vern was appointed as Chief Deputy under Sheriff Halverson in 2017 and I feel that this demonstrates the confidence Sheriff Halverson has placed in Vern. I worked along side Sheriff Halverson with my time working with Clearwater County – I fully supported Darin in his career and I trust Darin’s decision in hiring Vern Wittenberg and the confidence placed in Vern. I am placing my support for the next Clearwater County Sheriff in Vern Wittenberg and I thank Sheriff Halverson for his service to Clearwater County.

Respectfully,

Cheryl Grover

Dear Citizens of Clearwater County,

I am honored to offer my strong endorsement of Vern for Sheriff of Clearwater County.

I first met Vern in 1998 when he was still in high school through his late mother, Maxine, who served as a Communications and Corrections Officer for Clearwater County. At that time, I was working for the Clearbrook/Gonvick Police Department as the Assistant Chief of Police, and I also worked part time for the Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. Through those years in law enforcement, I had the opportunity to get to know Vern and his family and witness firsthand the values of service, dedication, and respect for the community that shaped him.

I followed Vern’s career as he attended Hibbing Community College for law enforcement. During his high school and college years, Vern completed numerous ride-alongs with me, which gave me the opportunity to observe his interest in law enforcement and his willingness to learn. Even at a young age, he demonstrated maturity, professionalism, and a genuine desire to serve others.

Over the years, I have watched Vern grow into a hardworking, dependable, and respected individual who truly cares about the people he serves. He understands the responsibilities that come with law enforcement and approaches those responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, and fairness.

Vern’s experience, character, and commitment to the community make him exceptionally qualified to serve as Sheriff. He has the leadership ability necessary to guide the department while maintaining strong relationships with the public and fellow officers alike. I believe he will work tirelessly to ensure public safety while treating all citizens with dignity and respect.

I am confident that Vern will serve the people of Clearwater County honorably and effectively, and I strongly encourage your support for his election as Sheriff.

Sincerely,

Aaron Johnson, retired police officer

November elections seem like a long way off, but we all know how fast spring and summer go around Northwest Minnesota.

Here in Clearwater County, we will have a Sheriff’s election and have some good candidates, with one really good candidate. I’m putting my support and help behind Chief Deputy Vern Wittenberg. He has quite an extensive resume and a lot of experience! Below are a few of his qualifications.

24 years of experience in Law Enforcement. In 2017, Vern was appointed by Sheriff Darin Halverson as the Chief Deputy. He has maintained that position since. The Chief Deputy is second in command and acts for the Sheriff in his absence. Vern has been part of the startup and building of the Clearwater County Mobile Command Unit. The Mobile Command Unit is used for remote search and rescue operations and any event that would require remote outreach. This command unit can be seen at the Clearwater County Fair in August. Vern has also been instrumental in the set up and activation of the Drone Program. He is one of the certified drone pilots at the Sheriff’s Office. He also works with the ATV, boat, & snowmobile patrol and rescue units. He has extensive knowledge of the Sheriff’s office, jail, and budgets.

Vern is involved in the Clearwater County DWI Treatment Court Program for the Sheriff’s Office and oversees Clearwater County Volunteer Sheriff’s Reserve. He helps run the fundraiser that will occur on 4/19/26 at the Bagley American Legion. This fundraiser helps to keep the Sheriff’s Reserve funded for equipment and training needed in search and rescues and other missions they do.

I know Vern best through his work with me on the Clearwater County Veteran’s Memorial Ride for the Stones. He has been involved in the ride, both as a motorcycle enthusiast and in official capacity in helping with the road guard. Vern has had the opportunity to lead the ride one year as well! He will be at this year’s ride once again. Please feel free to say hello or ask him questions or both.

The Sheriff’s office is nonpartisan but I know Vern to be a strong supporter of the Republican Party and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Vern supports the Veterans and is an advocate of Veterans’ mental health, the mental health of law enforcement officers, as well as the public they serve.

As a final note, this man is very Pro Clearwater County. On Fridays, you can find him alongside Sheriff Halverson to deliver meals on wheels. He attends local fundraisers, supporting our community. Vern is a born-and-raised Clearwater County resident. He is one of the most approachable and knowledgeable law enforcement officers I know. Vern is fair and consistent. We all know that law enforcement isn’t a popularity contest. You are going to make some enemies out there and you are going to have some people who stand behind you if you are doing your job correctly.

Feel free to leave comments & questions underneath, positive or negative, so Vern will have an opportunity to read and respond. You can also visit his website or approach him on the street. I am sure there will be opportunities to meet Vern in the upcoming months leading up to the primary election in August and the general election in November.

I stand behind him 100%!

A letter of Support from Alan Rogalla

March 17th, 2026

My name is Alan Rogalla and I am writing to express support to Vern Wittenberg as he runs for the position of Clearwater County Sheriff.

I began my career as a prosecutor in 1980 and worked with Vern from 2005 to 2017 during his tenure as a police officer in Thief River Falls. Vern’s background reflects a strong family tradition dedicated to serving the public as a law enforcement officer, both his Mother Maxine, and his brother, Dick served in the Law Enforcement field.

In 2018, I became the Clearwater County Attorney and continued to work with Vern in his capacity as Chief Deputy for the Sheriff’s Office until my retirement in 2021.  Throughout that time, I found Vern to be highly capable, responsive, and professional.  I could rely on Vern to address any issue promptly and effectively.  I know that his door would always be open to the Citizens of Clearwater County.

Vern is lifelong Clearwater County resident and brings extensive knowledge, practical experience, and sound judgment to his duties.  His temperament and common-sense approach make him an excellent candidate for the Clearwater County Sheriff’s position.

My wife and I are going to vote for Vern on election day.   I would ask you also consider voting for Vern Wittenberg to be the next Clearwater County Sheriff.

Respectfully Submitted

Al Rogalla
